Heart Day Genre Conventions

Valentine's Day usually has genre conventions of romance, love, and couples. The movie Deadpool was released on Valentine's Day last year and I think it subverted the traditional V-Day releases. Instead of just being a normal chic flick, it is a romantic super hero movie. Deadpool may begin with the protagonist murdering people, but then the movie jumps into how Wade Wilson met the love of his life and spent a year with her before he was diagnosed with cancer. The movie turns into a sappy romance after his diagnostic, and Wilson is offered a special experimental program to cure him when he gets his incredible healing powers. The movie from this point turns into a super hero romance where Wilson tries to save his girlfriend. The end is also similar to a romance when Wilson and his girlfriend have a moment about her not caring what he looks like. I like this Valentine's Day movie because of the spin it puts on the genre conventions, and the movie is a risky romantic comedy that was almost unprecedented.
